It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hayyan Ashja'i (may Allah have mercy on him) that once Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: Recite the Qur'an to me. I said: I have learned the Qur'an from you, and you are the one who teaches us the Qur'an (so what should I recite to you?). He said: One day I was present in the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he said: "Recite to me." I said: O Messenger of Allah! The Qur'an has been revealed to you, and we have learned it from you? He said: "That is so, but I wish to hear it from someone other than myself."
