It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about wiping over leather socks (khuffayn), I was present there at that time. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave a verdict in favor of Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I said to Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him): O Sa’d! We know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over the leather socks, but was it before or after the revelation of Surah Al-Ma’idah? No one will tell you that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over the leather socks after the revelation of Surah Al-Ma’idah. At this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) remained silent.
