It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that I once spent the night at the house of my maternal aunt, Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Maymunah bint Harith (may Allah be pleased with her). A pillow was placed for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he lay down resting his head on its length and slept. The household also slept. Then, around midnight or a little before or after it, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up and began to remove the effects of sleep. Then he recited the last ten verses of Surah Al-Imran in full. Then he came to the water-skin, untied its rope, and performed ablution. Then he stood up to pray. I also stood up and did what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had done, and I came and stood on his left side. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took me by the ear and turned me, so I ended up on his right side. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to pray during this time. The total number of rak‘ahs in the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) prayer was thirteen.
