It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fell ill with his final illness, he moved to the house of Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). One day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call Ali to me." Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: "Shall I also call Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call him." Sayyidah Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Shall I also call Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call him." Sayyidah Umm al-Fadl (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Shall I also call Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call him." When all these people gathered, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and looked, but Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was not seen, upon which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. After a little while, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Now get up from the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." In the meantime, Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came to inform about the prayer, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) submitted: "Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) is a soft-hearted man; when people do not see you, he will begin to weep, so you should order Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the people in prayer." Nevertheless, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with him) went out and led the people in prayer. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) felt some relief in his illness, so he came out, dragging his feet on the ground with the support of two men. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sensed the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he intended to step back, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to him and sat down at his left side, and began reciting from where Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had left off, and in this very illness he passed away. Waki’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was following the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people were following Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).
