It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) combined the Zuhr and Asr prayers, and the Maghrib and Isha prayers in Madinah Munawwarah. At that time, there was neither any journey nor rain. Someone asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) what was the purpose of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in doing so? He replied that the purpose of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was that his Ummah should not be in difficulty and that there should be ease for them.
