Yazid bin Asam says that once the mention of the lizard (dabb) was made in the presence of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them). A man present in his gathering said that it was presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he neither declared it lawful nor unlawful. Upon this, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "You have spoken incorrectly. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent only to determine what is lawful and unlawful." Then he said: "In fact, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was once at the house of Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). There, Sayyidah Umm Hufayd (may Allah be pleased with her) had come to meet her sister Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she had brought food with her in which there was the meat of the lizard. In the evening, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, and it was presented to him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to eat it, Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, 'O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! This is the meat of the lizard.' Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) withdrew his hand, but the people present there ate it. If it had been unlawful, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have forbidden them. However, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'It is not found in our land, so we avoid it.'"
