It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once Abu Jahl passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was praying, and said: "Did I not forbid you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rebuked him. He said: "Muhammad! Are you rebuking me even though you know that no one in this entire city has a greater assembly than mine?" At this, Jibreel (peace be upon him) brought down this verse: «﴿أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يَنْهَى o عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّى o أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَى o أَوْ أَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوَى o أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّى﴾ [العلق : 9-13]» "Have you seen the one who forbids a servant when he prays? Have you seen if he is upon guidance, or enjoins righteousness? Have you seen if he denies and turns away?" Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if he had called his companions, the angels of punishment, 'Zabaniyah', would have seized him.
