Hadith 3042

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that on the day of the Battle of Badr, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed in his tent, saying: "O Allah! Fulfill Your promise. O Allah! If (today this handful of Muslims is destroyed) then never again will You be worshipped on the earth." Seeing this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward, took the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: O Messenger of Allah! You have supplicated much to your Lord; He will surely fulfill His promise. Thereupon Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: « ﴿سَيُهْزَمُ الْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ الدُّبُرَ﴾ [القمر : 45]» "Soon this assembly will be defeated and they will turn their backs and flee."
