Yazid bin Asam, may Allah have mercy on him, says that once I presented myself in the service of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, and said: "So-and-so man got married, he invited us, and he presented thirteen lizards on the dining mat. It was evening time; some people ate from it and some abstained. His companions began to speak boastfully, until some people even said that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'I neither eat it nor declare it unlawful, nor do I command it nor prohibit it.'" Upon this, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: "You have spoken incorrectly. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was sent only to clarify what is lawful and unlawful." Then he said: "In fact, a dining mat was presented to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, on which there was bread and lizard meat. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, intended to eat from it, Sayyida Maymunah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: 'O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! This is lizard meat.' Upon hearing this, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, withdrew his hand and said: 'This is such meat that I do not eat, but you may eat.' Thus, Sayyiduna Fadl, Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid, may Allah be pleased with them both, and the woman present with them ate from it, and Sayyida Maymunah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: 'Whatever food the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, does not eat, I also do not eat.'"
