Shu’bah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Sayyiduna Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to visit Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) when he was ill. At that time, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was wearing a silk cloak of istabraq. Sayyiduna Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu al-Abbas! What is this garment? He asked: What do you mean? He replied: This is istabraq (silk). He said: By Allah! I did not realize that, and I think that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing it because of arrogance and oppression, and all praise is due to Allah! We are not like that. Then Sayyiduna Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What are these pictures on the brazier? He said: As you can see, we have burned them in the fire. Anyway, when Sayyiduna Miswar (may Allah be pleased with him) left, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Remove this cloak from me and cut off the heads of these statues. The people said: O Abu al-Abbas! If you take them to the market with their heads, you will get a good price for them. He refused and ordered that their heads be cut off.
