Hadith 2896

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of the conquest of Makkah: “This city is sacred. Allah Almighty has declared Makkah as a sanctuary, so fighting is not lawful here for those before me nor for those after me. It was made lawful for me only for a few moments of the day. Now it is forbidden until the Day of Resurrection. Its grass should not be cut, its trees should not be cut, its game should not be chased, and its lost property should not be picked up except by one who will announce it and return it to its owner.” Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Please make an exception for the grass called ‘izkhir’ for our goldsmiths and for graves. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made an exception for it and said: “Now migration is no longer obligatory, but jihad and intention remain. So when you are called to go forth for jihad, then go forth.”
