It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while mentioning the incident of the Night of Ascension (Mi'raj), said: "The night I was taken on the Mi'raj and in the morning I returned to Makkah, I feared that people would not believe my words, so I sat apart from everyone, saddened. Coincidentally, the enemy of Allah, Abu Jahl, passed by." He came and sat by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mockingly asked, 'Has something happened to you?' He replied, 'Yes!' He asked, 'What happened?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Tonight I was taken on a journey.' Abu Jahl asked, 'To which place?' He replied, 'To Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem).' He said, 'Then you returned to us by morning?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Yes.' Abu Jahl did not consider it appropriate to immediately deny the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so that if he brought the Quraysh, the Prophet would not retract his statement, and he said, 'If I call your people here, will you say this before them as well?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Yes!' Hearing this, he called out, 'O assembly of Banu Ka'b ibn Lu'ayy!' At Abu Jahl's call, the gatherings dispersed and everyone came and sat with the two of them. Abu Jahl, seeing them, said, 'Please relate to your people what you have told me.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Tonight I was taken on a journey.' The people asked, 'To where?' He replied, 'To Bayt al-Maqdis.' The people said, 'Then you returned to us by morning?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Yes.' Hearing this, some began clapping and some put their hands on their heads, for in their view, they were astonished at what they thought was a false statement. Then they said, 'Can you describe to us the condition of Masjid al-Aqsa?' In fact, at that time there was a person among the people who had traveled there and seen Masjid al-Aqsa. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'I began to describe the condition of Masjid al-Aqsa and continued describing it, until at one point I became somewhat confused, so Masjid al-Aqsa was brought before my eyes, and it seemed as if it had been placed near Dar 'Iqal or Dar 'Aqil, so I kept looking at it and describing it, including some things which I had not remembered before.' Hearing this, the people said, 'By Allah! He has described it accurately.' (But none of them inclined towards accepting Islam.)
