Shu’bah—who is the freed slave of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them)—says that when Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) performed ghusl for janabah, he would pour water from his right hand onto his left hand and wash it seven times before putting it into the vessel. Once, he forgot how many times he had poured water on his hand, so he began to ask me, “How many times did I pour water?” I replied, “I do not know.” He said, “May your mother be bereft of you! Why do you not know?” Then he performed the ablution for prayer, then poured water over his head and the rest of his body, and said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ghusl in this manner.
