It is narrated from Hazrat Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was sleeping in Masjid Nabawi when a thief came and took the cloth from under my head and went away. I chased him, caught him, and presented him before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "This person has stolen my cloth." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered his hand to be cut off. I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Will his hand be cut off for a sheet worth thirty dirhams? I give it to him as a gift." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Why did you not give it in charity before bringing him to me?"
