It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Dhamad Azdi once came to Makkah Mukarramah. He saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and also those few young men who followed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and said, "O Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! I treat madness." In response, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said these words: «إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ لِلّٰهِ نَسْتَعِينُهُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُهُ وَنَعُوذُ بِاللّٰهِ مِنْ شُرُورِ أَنْفُسِنَا مَنْ يَهْدِهِ اللّٰهُ فَلَا مُضِلَّ لَهُ وَمَنْ يُضْلِلْ فَلَا هَادِيَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ» "All praise is due to Allah, we seek help and forgiveness from Him, and we seek refuge in Him from the evil of our souls. Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomever He lets go astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger." Dhamad said, "Recite these words again." Then he said, "I have heard poetry, astrology, and soothsaying, but I have never heard words like these. These are words that reach the depths of the sea." He said this and recited the testimony of faith and accepted Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Is the guarantee of this testimony upon you and your people both?" He replied, "Yes! It is upon me and also upon my people." Thus, some time after this incident, a detachment of the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) companions passed by the people of Dhamad, and some people took a vessel or something of theirs. The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "This is a vessel belonging to the people of Dhamad, return it." So they returned that vessel to them.
