It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man from the Ansar spoke ill words about the father of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who had died during the time of ignorance. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) slapped him. The people of his tribe came and said that they would slap him in the same way as he had done, and they began to arm themselves. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) learned of this, he ascended the pulpit and said: "O people! Tell me, who is the most honorable among the people of the earth in the sight of Allah?" The people replied: "You are." He said: "Then Abbas is from me and I am from him, so do not harm our living by speaking ill of our deceased." Upon hearing this, the people of that Ansari came and said: "We seek refuge with Allah from your anger."
