حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ الْخُزَاعِيُّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا لَيْثٌ , وَيُونُسُ , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ الْهَادِ ، عَنْ هِنْدَ بِنْتِ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ أُمِّ الْفَضْلِ , أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : دَخَلَ عَلَى الْعَبَّاسِ وَهُوَ يَشْتَكِي ، فَتَمَنَّى الْمَوْتَ ، فَقَالَ : " يَا عَبَّاسُ , يَا عَمَّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ , لَا تَتَمَنَّ الْمَوْتَ إِنْ كُنْتَ مُحْسِنًا تَزْدَادُ إِحْسَانًا إِلَى إِحْسَانِكَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ ، وَإِنْ كُنْتَ مُسِيئًا ، فَإِنْ تُؤَخَّرْ تَسْتَعْتِبْ خَيْرٌ لَكَ ، فَلَا تَتَمَنَّ الْمَوْتَ " , قَالَ يُونُسُ : " وَإِنْ كُنْتَ مُسِيئًا ، فَإِنْ تُؤَخَّرْ تَسْتَعْتِبْ مِنْ إِسَاءَتِكَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ ".
It is narrated from Hazrat Umm al-Fadl that the Prophet (peace be upon him) once came to visit Hazrat Abbas, who was ill, and in the presence of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he began to wish for death. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: O Abbas! O uncle of the Messenger of Allah! Do not wish for death, because if you are righteous, then an increase in your good deeds is better for you, and if you are sinful and you are being given respite to repent, then that too is better for you. Therefore, do not wish for death.
