It is narrated from Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed that once he entered the house of Ummul Momineen Hazrat Maymunah bint Harith, who was his maternal aunt, along with the Prophet (peace be upon him). She placed the meat of a lizard (dabb) before the Prophet (peace be upon him), which had been brought from Najd by Umm Hafeed bint Harith, who was married to a man from Banu Ja'far. The blessed habit of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was that he would not partake of anything until he had asked what it was. Accordingly, one of the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Why do you not tell the Prophet (peace be upon him) what he is eating?" Upon this, they informed him that it was the meat of a lizard. The Prophet (peace be upon him) left it. Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed says, "I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah! Is it forbidden?' The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, 'No, but it is not the food of my people, so I prefer to be cautious about it.'" So I pulled it towards myself and began to eat it, and during this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) kept watching me.
