حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ مُظَفَّرُ بْنُ مُدْرِكٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى ، عَنْ أَبِي سَهْلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ , عَنْ مُسَّةَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ، قَالَتْ : " كَانَتْ النُّفَسَاءُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَقْعُدُ بَعْدَ نِفَاسِهَا أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا أَوْ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً ، قَالَتْ : وَكُنَّا نَطْلِي عَلَى وُجُوهِنَا الْوَرْسَ مِنَ الْكَلَفِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that in the blessed era of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), women used to consider themselves in postpartum bleeding (nifas) for forty days after childbirth, and due to spots appearing on our faces, we used to apply wars (a type of herb) to our faces.
