It is narrated from Hazrat Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that by the One by whom oaths can be sworn, I swear by Him that compared to other people, Hazrat Ali was closest to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of his last moments. We used to visit the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) daily to inquire about his health, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would repeatedly ask, "Has Ali come?" Apparently, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent him on some errand. After a short while, Hazrat Ali arrived. I understood that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to speak to him in private, so we all went outside the house and sat by the door, and among them, I was the closest to the door. Hazrat Ali leaned towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seated him on his left side and began to speak to him in whispers. And on that very day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away. In this regard, in the last moments, Hazrat Ali had the closest proximity to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
