It is narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) assumed the Ihram for both Hajj and Umrah and took the sacrificial animal with him, while some people assumed Ihram for Umrah and took the sacrificial animal with them, and some people assumed Ihram for Umrah but did not take the sacrificial animal with them. I was among this last group. Upon reaching Makkah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever among you has assumed Ihram for Umrah and brought the sacrificial animal with him, he should perform the Tawaf of the House of Allah and the Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, and should not consider anything from the prohibited things as lawful for himself until he has offered the sacrifice on the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah and completed the Hajj. And whoever has not brought the sacrificial animal, he should perform Tawaf and Sa’i and become lawful (i.e., come out of Ihram), and later assume Ihram for Hajj and bring the sacrificial animal. Whoever does not find a sacrificial animal should fast three days during the days of Hajj and seven days after returning home. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) postponed the Umrah by giving precedence to the Hajj, fearing that it might be missed.
