حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذٌ , قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو , عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ , قَالَتْ : كَانَتْ لَنَا حَصِيرَةٌ نَبْسُطُهَا بِالنَّهَارِ , وَنَحْتَجِرُهَا بِاللَّيْلِ , فَصَلَّى فِيهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ , فَسَمِعَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ قِرَاءَتَهُ , فَصَلَّوْا بِصَلَاتِهِ , فَلَمَّا كَانَتْ اللَّيْلَةُ الثَّانِيَةُ كَثُرُوا , فَاطَّلَعَ إِلَيْهِمْ , فَقَالَ : " اكْلَفُوا مِنَ الْأَعْمَالِ مَا تُطِيقُونَ , فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَمَلُّ حَتَّى تَمَلُّوا " وَكَانَ أَحَبُّ الْعَمَلِ إِلَيْهِ أَدْوَمَهُ , وَإِنْ قَلَّ , قَالَتْ : وَكَانَ إِذَا صَلَّى صَلَاةً أَثْبَتَهَا .
It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that we had a mat which we used to spread out during the day and at night we would cover ourselves with it. Once, at night, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying; the people of the mosque found out and mentioned it to others the next day. Consequently, many people gathered the following night. Seeing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take upon yourselves only as many deeds as you are able to bear, for Allah will not tire, but you surely will. And it was the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he started a prayer, he would remain steadfast in it, and to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the most beloved deed was that which was done consistently."
