حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ , عنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ , قَالَ : دَخَلَتْ امْرَأَةُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ مَظْعُونٍ , أَحْسِبُ اسْمَهَا خَوْلَةَ بِنْتَ حَكِيمٍ , عَلَى عَائِشَةَ , وَهِيَ بَاذَّةُ الْهَيْئَةِ , فَسَأَلْتُهَا مَا شَأْنُكِ ؟ , فَقَالَتْ : زَوْجِي يَقُومُ اللَّيْلَ وَيَصُومُ النَّهَارَ , فَدَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , فَذَكَرَتْ عَائِشَةُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ , فَلَقِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عُثْمَانَ , فَقَالَ : " يَا عُثْمَانُ , إِنَّ الرَّهْبَانِيَّةَ لَمْ تُكْتَبْ عَلَيْنَا , أَفَمَا لَكَ فِيَّ أُسْوَةٌ ؟ فَوَاللَّهِ إِنِّي أَخْشَاكُمْ لِلَّهِ , وَأَحْفَظُكُمْ لِحُدُودِهِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the wife of Hazrat Uthman bin Maz'un used to apply henna and was fragrant with perfume, but suddenly she abandoned all these things. One day she came to me in a disheveled state, so I asked her, "What is your condition?" She said, "My husband spends the nights in worship and fasts during the day." After a little while, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me, so I mentioned this matter to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met her and said, "O Uthman! Monasticism has not been made obligatory upon us. Is there not a good example for you in my person? By Allah, I am the one who fears Allah the most among you and is most careful in guarding His limits."
