Yazid bin Babnoos says that once I, along with my companion, presented myself before Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and sought permission from her. She arranged a cushion for us and drew a curtain towards herself. Then my companion asked, "O Mother of the Believers! What do you say about 'Iraak'?" She replied, "What is Iraak?" I struck my companion on the shoulder. Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) stopped me and said, "You have hurt your brother." Then she asked, "What is meant by Iraak? Menstruation? Then say directly the word that Allah has used, that is, menstruation. Sometimes I would be menstruating, but even then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would embrace me and kiss my head, and there would be a curtain between me and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Then she said, "It was the blessed habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that whenever he passed by the door of my house, he would say something from which Allah would benefit me. One day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by but said nothing. When this happened two or three times, I told my maid to place a cushion for me at the door, and I tied a band around my head and sat there. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me, he said, 'Aisha! What is the matter?' I replied, 'My head is hurting.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'My head is also hurting.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left. A little while later, people brought the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrapped in a sheet. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed with me and sent a message to the other wives that he was ill and did not have the strength to visit each of them in turn, so if they permitted, he would stay with Aisha. They all gave permission, and I began to nurse the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), although I had never nursed anyone before."
"One day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had placed his blessed head on my shoulder when suddenly his blessed head drooped towards my head. I thought perhaps he wanted to kiss my head, but at that moment, a drop of saliva came from the mouth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and fell on my chest. My hair stood on end, and I thought perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had fainted, so I covered him with a sheet. Meanwhile, Hazrat Umar and Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with them) arrived. They sought permission, I granted it, and drew the curtain towards myself. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, 'Oh, unconsciousness! How severe is the unconsciousness upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)!' After a short while, they stood up, and when they reached near the door, Mughirah bin Shu’bah said, 'O Umar! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away.' Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'You are wrong; rather, you are a troublemaker. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cannot pass away until Allah eliminates the hypocrites.'"
"A little while later, Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) also arrived. I lifted the veil. He looked at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), recited 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un,' and said, 'The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away.' Then he came from the side of the head, bent over the blessed face, kissed the forehead, and said, 'Oh, my Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)!' He did this three times, the second time saying, 'Oh, my friend,' and the third time, 'Oh, my beloved.' Then he went towards the mosque. At that time, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was addressing and speaking to the people, saying that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not pass away until Allah eliminated the hypocrites. Then Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) began to speak, and after praising Allah, he said, 'Allah says: "You (O Muhammad) will die, and they too will die..." and that "Muhammad is but a Messenger; Messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is killed, will you then turn back on your heels?" So whoever worshipped Allah should know that Allah is alive, and whoever worshipped Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) should know that he has passed away.' Upon hearing these verses, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'Are these verses in the Book of Allah? My mind had not even gone to the fact that this verse is in the Book of Allah.' Then Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'O people! This is Abu Bakr, and he is the elder of the Muslims, so pledge allegiance to him.' Thus, the people pledged allegiance to him."
