حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بن أبي إسحاق ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِعَائِشَةَ أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ : أَيُّ سَاعَةٍ تُوتِرِينَ ؟ لَعَلَّهُ ، قَالَتْ : مَا أُوتِرُ حَتَّى يُؤَذِّنُونَ ، وَمَا يُؤَذِّنُونَ حَتَّى يَطْلُعَ الْفَجْرُ ، قَالَتْ : وَكَانَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُؤَذِّنَانِ بِلَالٌ ، وَعَمْرُو ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا أَذَّنَ عَمْرٌو ، فَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا ، فَإِنَّهُ رَجُلٌ ضَرِيرُ الْبَصَرِ وإِذَا أَذَّنَ بِلَالٌ فَارْفَعُوا أَيْدِيَكُمْ ، فَإِنَّ بِلَالًا لَا يُؤَذِّنُ كَذَا قَالَ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ " .
Aswad bin Yazid says that I asked Umm al-Mu'mineen Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) how she performed Witr. Perhaps she said that I perform Witr at the time when the muezzin begins to give the adhan, and the muezzin gives the adhan at the time of the rising of Fajr. She also said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had two muezzins, one was Hazrat Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) and the other was Amr bin Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Ibn Umm Maktum gives the adhan when the night still remains, so after his adhan you may eat and drink, until Bilal gives the adhan, then you should stop, because Bilal does not give the adhan until the morning has come.
