حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ . وَحَجَّاجٌ قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ . وَرَوْحٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ سَعْدٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عُرْوَةَ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ : كُنْتُ أَسْمَعُ أَنَّهُ لَنْ يَمُوتَ نَبِيٌّ حَتَّى يُخَيَّرَ بَيْنَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ ، قَالَت : فَسَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَرَضِهِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ وَأَخَذَتْهُ بُحَّةٌ ، يَقُولُ : مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ وَحَسُنَ أُولَئِكَ رَفِيقًا سورة النساء آية 69 ، قَالَتْ : فَظَنَنْتُ ، أَنَّهُ خُيِّرَ حِينَئِذٍ . قَالَ رَوْحٌ : إِنَّهُ خُيِّرَ بَيْنَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ.
It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say: When the time came for a prophet's soul to be taken, after their soul was taken, their reward was shown to them, then it was returned and they were given the choice whether they wished to be returned to that reward (or sent back to the world). I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) during his illness of death, his neck had dropped, and I heard him saying: "With those upon whom Allah has bestowed His favor, such as the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous, and what a good companionship they are." I understood that the Prophet (peace be upon him) had been given the choice at that moment.
