It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she wanted to buy Barirah in order to set her free, but her owners made her allegiance (wala’) a condition for themselves. I mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Buy her and set her free, for the inheritance of a slave belongs to the one who sets him free. Also, people used to give her some charity, and she would give us some of it as a gift. I mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is charity for her and a gift for you, so you may eat it. The narrator says that her husband was a free man.
