Musa bin Salamah, may Allah have mercy on him, says that once I and Sinan bin Salamah set out for Hajj. Sinan had a she-camel, which became exhausted on the way, and he became helpless because of it. I thought that when I reach Makkah, I will definitely inquire about it. So when we reached Makkah, I said to Sinan, "Come, let us go to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both." We went there, and when we arrived, there was a girl sitting with Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both. I had two matters to ask him, and my companion had one. He said, "I will go outside; you can speak in private?" I said, "There is nothing that needs to be asked in private." Then I said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, "I had a she-camel that became exhausted on the way. I had thought in my heart that when I reach Makkah, I will definitely inquire about it." Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: "Once the Prophet (ﷺ) sent some camels with a man and gave him the necessary instructions. When that man was about to leave, he turned back and said, 'O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! If any of these camels becomes exhausted, what should I do?' He said: 'Slaughter it, dye its hoof with its blood, and put it on its forehead. Neither eat it yourself nor let any of your companions eat it.'"
I asked the second question: "I participate in battles and receive a share of the spoils of war. If I free a slave or a slave-girl on behalf of my mother, will my freeing someone on her behalf suffice for her?" Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: "The wife of Sinan bin Abdullah Juhani said to him, 'Ask the Prophet (ﷺ) this question: My mother has passed away and she could not perform Hajj. Will my performing Hajj on her behalf suffice for her?' The Prophet (ﷺ) replied: 'If your mother had a debt and you paid it off, would it be considered paid or not?' She said, 'Yes!' He said: 'Then you should perform Hajj on behalf of your mother.'"
They also asked about the water of the sea, so he said: "The water of the sea is purifying."
