It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that during the Battle of the Trench, I went out following the footprints of the people. I heard the sound of the earth being split behind me. I turned around and suddenly Sa’d bin Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him) appeared before me. With him was his nephew Harith bin Aws, who was carrying a shield. I sat down on the ground. Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by, wearing an iron coat of mail, parts of his body exposed, about which I feared harm might come to him, because Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) was the greatest and tallest among the people. As he passed near me, he was reciting this rajaz poetry: “Wait a little, the battle will bear its burden, and how good is the death that comes at its appointed time.” After that, I got up from there and entered a garden. I saw that a group of Muslims was present there, among whom was Hazrat Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him), and one of them had a helmet on his head. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw me and said, “Why have you come? By Allah, you are very bold! How did you become fearless of the possibility that some calamity might befall you or someone might seize you?” He kept reproaching me until I wished that the earth would split open and I would be swallowed by it. Meanwhile, that man removed the helmet from his face, and it was Hazrat Talha bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him). He said, “O Umar! Today you have really exceeded the limit. Where is there to go or to be gathered except to Allah?” Then, one of the polytheists of Quraysh, whose name was Ibn Arqah, began shooting arrows at Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, “Stop this target, for I am Ibn Arqah.” The arrow struck Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) in the vein of his arm and severed it. Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed to Allah, “O Allah! Do not let me die until my eyes are cooled regarding the matter of Banu Qurayza.” The people of Banu Qurayza were his allies and freed slaves from the time of ignorance. In any case, his wound healed, and Allah sent a wind upon the polytheists and sufficed the Muslims from fighting, and Allah is Powerful and Dominant. Thus, Abu Sufyan and his companions returned to Tihamah, Uyainah bin Badr and his companions went to Najd, Banu Qurayza retreated to their forts, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned to Madinah and, after removing his armor, ordered that a leather tent be set up for Sa’d in the mosque. Meanwhile, Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) came, with dust showing on his teeth, and said, “Have you put down your weapons? By Allah, the angels have not yet put down their weapons. Set out towards Banu Qurayza and fight them.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put on his coat of mail, announced the march among the people, and set out. On the way, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Banu Ghanm, who were neighbors living around the Prophet’s Mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Has anyone passed by you?” They replied, “Dihyah Kalbi passed by us.” In fact, the beard, teeth, and face of Hazrat Dihyah Kalbi (may Allah be pleased with him) resembled Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached near Banu Qurayza and laid siege to them, which lasted for twenty-five days. When the siege became severe and their troubles increased, someone advised them to surrender to the judgment of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They consulted Hazrat Abu Lubabah (may Allah be pleased with him) in this matter, and he indicated by gesture that they would be killed. Upon this, they said, “We surrender to the judgment of Sa’d bin Mu’adh.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted this, and they laid down their arms. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for Hazrat Sa’d bin Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him), who was brought riding on a donkey with a saddle of palm fiber. His people surrounded him, saying, “O Abu Amr! These are your allies, freed slaves, and weak people, and those whom you know.” But he neither replied to them nor paid attention to them. When he reached near their houses, he turned to his people and said, “Now is the time when I will not care about the blame of any blamer for the sake of Allah.” When he approached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet said, “Stand up for your leader and help him dismount.” Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said...
