حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ فِرَاسٍ ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ : اجْتَمَعَ أَزْوَاجُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عِنْدَهُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ ، فَقُلْنَ : يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ، أَيَّتُنَا أَسْرَعُ بِكَ لُحُوقًا ؟ فَقَالَ : " أَطْوَلُكُنَّ يَدًا " . فَأَخَذْنَا قَصَبًا فَذَرَعْنَاهَا ، فَكَانَتْ سَوْدَةُ بِنْتُ زَمْعَةَ أَطْوَلَنَا ذِرَاعًا ، فَقَالَتْ : تُوُفِّيَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَكَانَتْ سَوْدَةُ أَسْرَعَنَا بِهِ لُحُوقًا ، فَعَرَفْنَا بَعْدُ أَنَّمَا كَانَ طُولُ يَدِهَا مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ ، وَكَانَتْ امْرَأَةً تُحِبُّ الصَّدَقَةَ . وَقَالَ عَفَّانُ مَرَّةً : قَصَبَةً نَذْرَعُهَا.
It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha that once all the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) were gathered in his presence. They asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Which one of us will meet you first after you?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, "The one among you whose hand is the longest." We took a stick and started measuring our hands with it. The hand of Hazrat Sawda bint Zam'a turned out to be the longest. Soon after the passing of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Hazrat Sawda joined him. Later, we realized that by the length of the hand, what was meant was generosity in charity, and she was a woman who loved to give charity.
