It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man from Banu Sulaym was driving his goats and passed by some of the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). He greeted them with salam. They said, "He only greeted us to save his life." Saying this, they advanced towards him and killed him, and brought his goats to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Upon this, the following verse was revealed: «﴿يَاأَيُّهَاالَّذِينَآمَنُواإِذَاضَرَبْتُمْفِيسَبِيلِاللّٰهِفَتَبَيَّنُواوَلَاتَقُولُوالِمَنْأَلْقَىإِلَيْكُمُالسَّلَامَلَسْتَمُؤْمِنًا . . . . .﴾ [النساء : 94]» "O you who believe! When you go forth in the way of Allah, investigate carefully, and do not say to the one who offers you peace, 'You are not a believer' . . . . ."
