It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha that a Jewish woman used to serve her. Whenever Hazrat Aisha did any kindness to her, she would pray for her, saying, "May Allah protect you from the punishment of the grave." Once, the Prophet (peace be upon him) came to me, so I asked him, "O Messenger of Allah! Is there punishment in the grave before the Day of Resurrection?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, "No, but why are you asking?" I said, "Whenever I do any good to this Jewish woman, she says, 'May Allah protect you from the punishment of the grave.'" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The Jews lie; they even falsely attribute things to Allah. There will be no punishment before the Day of Resurrection." After a short time, "as long as Allah willed," the Prophet (peace be upon him) came out at midday, his clothes wrapped around him, his eyes were red, and he was loudly proclaiming, "O people! Trials have come upon you like pieces of a dark night. O people! If you knew what I know, you would weep much and laugh little. O people! Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave, and the punishment of the grave is indeed true."
