Narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when people began to gossip about me, of which I had no knowledge, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to deliver a sermon. He testified to the two declarations of faith, praised and glorified Allah as is His due, and after saying "Amma ba'd" (to proceed), he said: "Advise me regarding those people who have accused my family. By Allah, I know nothing but good about my family, and regarding the person with whom people have accused them, by Allah, I know nothing but good about him as well. Whenever he entered my house, he did so only in my presence, and whenever I went on a journey, he accompanied me." Upon hearing this, Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Our opinion is that you should have the necks of these people struck." Then a man from the tribe of Khazraj stood up—Umm Hassan bin Thabit was among his group—and said, "You are wrong. If these people were from the tribe of Aws, you would never like their necks to be struck." It was close that a fight would break out between the two groups in the mosque.
Anyway, that same evening I went out to relieve myself, accompanied by Umm Mistah. On the way, her foot got entangled in her cloak and she fell. From her mouth came the words, "Mistah is ruined!" I said to her, "Why are you speaking ill of your son?" She remained silent. This happened three times. Finally, she said, "I am speaking ill of him only because of you." I asked her for details, and she told me the whole story. I asked, "Has this really happened?" She said, "Yes!" When I returned home and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and greeted me and inquired about my condition, I said, "If you permit, may I go to my parents' house?" Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says, "My purpose in going there was to find out the truth from my parents." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me permission. I went to my mother and asked, "Mother, what are people talking about?" My mother said, "Daughter, you should not worry. By Allah, it often happens that a woman who is beautiful and beloved to her husband, and who has co-wives, her co-wives always find faults in her." SubhanAllah! I asked her, "Does father know about this?" She said, "Yes!" I asked, "And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) too?" She said, "Yes!" At this, tears came to my eyes and I began to weep. My father, who was reciting (Qur'an) upstairs, heard my voice and came down and asked my mother, "What has happened to her?" She replied, "She has also come to know of the incident, so she is crying." He said, "Daughter! I ask you by Allah, return to your home." So I went back. Shortly after, both of them came to me and stayed with me until after Asr, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came after the Asr prayer. My parents were on my right and left. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down, recited the testimony of faith, and after praising and glorifying Allah, said: "Aisha! I have heard such and such things about you. If you are innocent, then soon Allah will declare your innocence. And if you have committed a sin, then seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him, for when a servant confesses his sin and repents, Allah accepts his repentance and forgives his sin." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished speaking, my tears stopped completely and not a single drop came out. I said to my father, "Please answer the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on my behalf." My father said, "By Allah, I do not know what to say." I said to my mother, "You answer." She said, "By Allah, I do not know what to say." Although I was a young girl and had not read much of the Qur'an, I said, "By Allah, I know that you have heard this and it has settled in your hearts and you have believed it to be true. So if I declare myself innocent before you, you will not believe me, and if I confess to a sin I have not committed (and Allah is witness that I am innocent), you will consider me truthful. By Allah, I find no example for myself and you except that of Hazrat Yaqub (Jacob) (peace be upon him), who said: 'So patience is most fitting, and Allah is the one sought for help against that which you describe.'" At that very moment, revelation came upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his usual state, until pearls of sweat appeared on his blessed face...
