Hadith 24316

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) loved sweet things and honey, and it was the habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that after the Asr prayer, he would visit all his pure wives and grant them his closeness. One day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Hazrat Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) and stayed with her longer than usual. When I inquired about this, I found out that a woman from Hafsa’s tribe had gifted her a vessel of honey, and she had given the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that honey to drink (which caused the delay). I thought to myself, "By Allah, I will devise a plan." So I mentioned this incident to Hazrat Sawda (may Allah be pleased with her) and told her to say, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) comes to you and is near you, "O Messenger of Allah! Did you eat Maghafir (a particular kind of gum with a bad smell)?" He will say, "No." You should say, "Then what is this odor coming from your mouth?" Since the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greatly disliked bad smells, he would say, "Hafsa gave me honey to drink." You should say, "Perhaps the honeybee sat on the tree of Maghafir." I will say the same to him, and Safiyyah, you should also say the same. So when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Hazrat Sawda (may Allah be pleased with her), she says, "By the One besides whom there is no deity, out of fear of you, I was about to say this even when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was still at the door." Anyway, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came near, I said exactly what was planned, and the same questions and answers took place. Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says, "When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me, I also said the same, then he went to Hazrat Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she also said the same. Then when he went to Hazrat Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) and she said, 'O Messenger of Allah! Shall I not give you some honey to drink?' the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, 'I do not feel like it.' Upon this, Hazrat Sawda (may Allah be pleased with her) said, 'SubhanAllah! By Allah, we have made the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) give up honey.' I said to her, 'You should remain silent.'"
