Hadith 241

(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا أَحْلِفُ بِأَبِي ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ " ، قَالَ عُمَرُ : فَوَاللَّهِ مَا حَلَفْتُ بِهَا بَعْدُ ذَاكِرًا ، وَلَا آثِرًا .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heard me swearing by my father. He said: "Allah Almighty has forbidden you from swearing by the names of your forefathers." After that, I never swore such an oath intentionally or even by way of quoting.
