حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، أَنْبَأَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيِّ ، عَنْ سَلْمَانَ ، قَالَ : كَاتَبْتُ أَهْلِي عَلَى أَنْ أَغْرِسَ لَهُمْ خَمْسَ مِائَةِ فَسِيلَةٍ ، فَإِذَا عَلِقَتْ فَأَنَا حُرٌّ ، قَالَ : فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ ، قَالَ : " اغْرِسْ وَاشْتَرِطْ لَهُمْ ، فَإِذَا أَرَدْتَ أَنْ تَغْرِسَ فَآذِنِّي " قَالَ : فَآذَنْتُهُ ، قَالَ : فَجَاءَ ، فَجَعَلَ يَغْرِسُ بِيَدِهِ إِلَّا وَاحِدَةً غَرَسْتُهَا بِيَدَيَّ ، فَعَلِقْنَ إِلَّا الْوَاحِدَةَ .
It is narrated from Hazrat Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) that I accepted a contract of manumission from my master on the condition that I would plant five hundred date palm saplings for him; when they would bear fruit, I would become free. I presented myself before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this condition. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Accept this condition, and when you intend to plant the saplings, inform me." So I informed the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and began to plant the saplings with his own hands, except for one sapling which I planted with my own hand. All the saplings bore fruit except for that one.
