حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ إِسْحَاقَ ، حَدَّثَنِي الزُّهْرِيُّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ صُعَيْرٍ ، " أَنَّ أَبَا جَهْلٍ ، قَالَ حِينَ الْتَقَى الْقَوْمُ : اللَّهُمَّ أَقْطَعَنَا للرَّحِمَ ، وَآتَانَا بِمَا لَا نَعْرِفُهُ ، فَأَحْنِهِ الْغَدَاةَ ، فَكَانَ الْمُسْتَفْتِحَ " . .
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Abu Jahl prayed on the day of the Battle of Uhud: "O Allah! He has severed the ties of kinship and brought to us something we do not recognize, so show mercy to us tomorrow." It was as if he was praying for victory.
