It is narrated from Muhammad bin Ka'b Qarzi (may Allah have mercy on him) that a young man from among the people of Kufa asked Hudhayfah bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him), "O Abu Abdullah! Did you have the honor of seeing and accompanying the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied, "Yes, nephew!" The questioner asked, "What would you people do?" He replied, "We would put ourselves in hardship." The questioner said, "By Allah! If we had found the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), we would not have let him walk on the ground, but would have carried him on our necks." Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Nephew! By Allah! We saw during the Battle of the Trench that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the 'Isha prayer in the darkness of the night, then turned towards us and said, 'Who is the man who will go and find out the condition of the enemy?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) promised that Allah would admit him to Paradise, but no one stood up. After some part of the night had passed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again led us in prayer, then turned towards us and made the same announcement, and this time said, 'He will be my companion in Paradise.' Still, due to the intensity of fear, hunger, and cold, no one stood up. When no one stood up, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me. At that time, I had no choice but to stand. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), go and see what the condition of the enemy is, and do not do anything new until you return to us.' So I went and entered the enemy's camp, where the winds and Allah's army were at work, and none of their pots, fires, or tents could remain in place. Seeing this, Abu Sufyan bin Harb stood up and said, 'O group of Quraysh, let every man see who is sitting with him (lest there be a spy).' At this, I grabbed the hand of the man sitting next to me and asked him, 'Who are you?' He replied, 'I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so.' Then Abu Sufyan said, 'O group of Quraysh, by Allah! It is no longer possible for you to remain here. The livestock are perishing, Banu Qurayza have broken their promise to us, and we are facing unpleasant circumstances from their side, and you can see for yourselves the situation caused by this wind: no pot can remain in place, no fire can stay lit, and the tents cannot remain standing. Therefore, my opinion is that you should return, and I myself am going back.' Saying this, he went to his horse, which was tied with a rope, mounted it, and spurred it on. It jumped three times, but when he released the rope, it stood still. If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not instructed me not to do anything new until I returned to him, I would have wanted to shoot my arrow and kill him. Then I returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who at that time was standing in prayer in a cloak made from the hair of one of his noble wives. When he saw me, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me into his tent and covered me with a corner of his cloak. Then he bowed and prostrated while I remained in the tent. When he finished the prayer, I told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) everything, and when Banu Ghatafan learned what Quraysh had done, they too returned to their own area.
