مُسْنَدُ عَبْدِ اللّٰهِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ رَضِيَ اللّٰهُ عَنْهُمَاMusnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them)
Hadith 2333

(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، قَالَ عَبْد اللَّهِ بْن أَحْمَد وَسَمِعْتُهُ أَنَا مِنْهُ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِير ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ إِيَاسٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : سَأَلَ أَهْلُ مَكَّةَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَجْعَلَ لَهُمْ الصَّفَا ذَهَبًا ، وَأَنْ يُنَحِّيَ الْجِبَالَ عَنْهُمْ ، فَيَزَْرعُوا ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ : إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تَسْتَأْنِيَ بِهِمْ ، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تُؤْتِيَهُمْ الَّذِي سَأَلُوا ، فَإِنْ كَفَرُوا أُهْلِكُوا كَمَا أَهْلَكْتُ مَنْ قَبْلَهُمْ , قَالَ : " لَا ، بَلْ أَسْتَأْنِي بِهِمْ " , فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ : وَمَا مَنَعَنَا أَنْ نُرْسِلَ بِالآيَاتِ إِلا أَنْ كَذَّبَ بِهَا الأَوَّلُونَ وَآتَيْنَا ثَمُودَ النَّاقَةَ مُبْصِرَةً سورة الإسراء آية 59 .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Quraysh demanded from the Prophet (peace be upon him) to supplicate to his Lord to turn the mountain of Safa into gold for them, and to remove the other mountains so that they could cultivate the land, and they said, "We will believe in you." (The Prophet [peace be upon him] said: "Will you really believe?" They said: "Yes!" The Prophet [peace be upon him] supplicated, and Jibreel [peace be upon him] appeared and said: "Your Lord sends you greetings and says:) 'If you wish, wait, and if you wish, the mountain of Safa will be turned into gold for them, but after that, if any of them disbelieves, then I will destroy them as I destroyed the former peoples.'" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "I will wait." Then Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: «﴿وَمَا مَنَعَنَا أَنْ نُرْسِلَ بِالْآيَاتِ إِلَّا أَنْ كَذَّبَ بِهَا الْأَوَّلُونَ وَآتَيْنَا ثَمُودَ النَّاقَةَ مُبْصِرَةً﴾ [الإسراء : 59]» "Nothing prevents Us from sending the signs except that the former peoples denied them. So We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her."
