Hadith 233

(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْل ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ سُمَيْعٍ ، عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ الْبَطِينِ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْبَخْتَرِيِّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عُمَرُ لِأَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ بْنِ الْجَرَّاحِ : " ابْسُطْ يَدَكَ حَتَّى أُبَايِعَكَ ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : أَنْتَ أَمِينُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ ، فَقَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ : مَا كُنْتُ لِأَتَقَدَّمَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَجُلٍ أَمَرَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَؤُمَّنَا ، فَأَمَّنَا حَتَّى مَاتَ " .
Abu Al-Bakhtari narrates that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) once said to Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Stretch out your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you, because I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that you are the trustworthy one of this Ummah." He replied: "I cannot go ahead of the one whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded to lead us and who continued to lead us until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away."
