Hadith 23124

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبةُ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بنِ كُلَيْب ، عَنْ عِيَاضِ بنِ مَرْثَدٍ ، أَوْ مَرْثَدِ بنِ عِيَاضٍ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَخْبرْنِي بعَمَلٍ يُدْخِلُنِي الْجَنَّةَ ، قَالَ : " هَلْ مِنْ وَالِدَيْكَ مِنْ أَحَدٍ حَيٌّ ؟ " ، قَالَه لَهُ مَرَّاتٍ ، قَالَ : لَا ، قَالَ : " فَاسْقِ الْمَاءَ " ، قَالَ : كَيْفَ أَسْقِيهِ ؟ قَالَ : " اكْفِهِمْ آلَتَهُ إِذَا حَضَرُوهُ ، وَاحْمِلْهُ إِلَيْهِمْ إِذَا غَابوا عَنْهُ " .
A man asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah! Tell me about a deed that will admit me into Paradise." The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked him, "Are either of your parents alive?" He said, "No." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Then give water to the people." He asked, "How is that?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "When people are present, guard their water-drawing vessels, and when they are absent (and forgetfully leave them behind), pick them up and return them to them."
