ومن مسند بني هاشمFrom the Musnad of Banu Hashim
مُسْنَدُ عَبْدِ اللّٰهِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ رَضِيَ اللّٰهُ عَنْهُمَاMusnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them)
Hadith 2309

(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَتْ قُرَيْشٌ لِلْيَهُودِ : " أَعْطُونَا شَيْئًا نَسْأَلُ عَنْهُ هَذَا الرَّجُلَ ، فَقَالُوا : سَلُوهُ عَنِ الرُّوحِ ، فَسَأَلُوهُ ، فَنَزَلَتْ وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الرُّوحِ قُلِ الرُّوحُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّي وَمَا أُوتِيتُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ إِلا قَلِيلا سورة الإسراء آية 85 , قَالُوا : أُوتِينَا عِلْمًا كَثِيرًا ، أُوتِينَا التَّوْرَاةَ ، وَمَنْ أُوتِيَ التَّوْرَاةَ ، فَقَدْ أُوتِيَ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا ، قَالَ : فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ قُلْ لَوْ كَانَ الْبَحْرُ مِدَادًا لِكَلِمَاتِ رَبِّي لَنَفِدَ الْبَحْرُ سورة الكهف آية 109 " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Quraysh said to the Jews, "Tell us something that we can ask this man." They said, "Ask him about the soul." So the Quraysh asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the soul, upon which this verse was revealed: « ﴿وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الرُّوحِ قُلِ الرُّوحُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّي وَمَا أُوتِيتُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا﴾ [الإسراء : 85]» "They ask you concerning the soul. Say: The soul is by the command of my Lord, and you have been given but little knowledge." They said, "We have been given much knowledge, for we have been given the Torah, and whoever has been given the Torah has been given great goodness." Upon this, Allah revealed this verse: «﴿قُلْ لَوْ كَانَ الْبَحْرُ مِدَادًا لِكَلِمَاتِ رَبِّي لَنَفِدَ الْبَحْرُ . . . . .﴾ [الكهف : 109]» "Say: If the sea were ink for (writing) the words of my Lord, the sea would surely be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted . . . . ."
