حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بنُ قُرْمٍ ، عَنِ الْأَشْعَثِ ، عَنْ عَمَّتِهِ رُهْمٍ ، عَنْ عُبيْدَةَ بنِ خَلَفٍ ، قَالَ : قدمت المدينة وَأَنَا شَاب مُتَأَزِّرٌ ببرْدَةٍ لِي مَلْحَاءَ أَجُرُّهَا ، فَأَدْرَكَنِي رَجُلٌ فَغَمَزَنِي بمِخْصَرَةٍ مَعَهُ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " أَمَا لَوْ رَفَعْتَ ثَوْبكَ كَانَ أَبقَى وَأَنْقَى " ، فَالْتَفَتُّ ، فَإِذَا هُوَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّمَا هِيَ برْدَةٌ مَلْحَاءُ ، قَالَ : " وَإِنْ كَانَتْ برْدَةً مَلْحَاءَ ، أَمَا لَكَ فِي أُسْوَتِي ؟ " , فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى إِزَارِهِ ، فَإِذَا فَوْقَ الْكَعْبيْنِ وَتَحْتَ الْعَضَلَةِ .
It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was in the market of "Dhu al-Majaz." I was wearing a beautiful red and white sheet on my body. Suddenly, a man poked me with his stick and said, "Raise your lower garment, for it lasts longer and remains clean." When I looked, it was the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), this is a beautiful sheet." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Even if it is beautiful, is there not an example for you in my person?" And I observed that the lower garment of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was up to the middle of his shins.
