It is narrated from Hazrat Buraidah (may Allah be pleased with him) that we laid siege to Khaybar. Hazrat Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) took the flag, but he returned without conquering the specific and important fort. The next day, he again took the flag and set out, but even today the fort could not be conquered, and on that day, the people faced much hardship and difficulty. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Tomorrow I will give this flag to a person whom Allah and His Messenger love, and he loves Allah and His Messenger, and he will not return without achieving victory." So, all night we remained happy at the thought that tomorrow this fort would also be conquered. When morning came, after the Fajr prayer, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and called for the flag. The people were sitting in their rows. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who was suffering from an eye ailment. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) applied his saliva to his eyes and handed the flag over to him, and through his hands, the fort was conquered, although I too was among those who desired it. When Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) confronted the people of Khaybar, Marhab came before him reciting boastful verses: "All of Khaybar knows that I am Marhab, armed, brave, and experienced; sometimes I fight with a spear and sometimes with a sword, when lions come roaring before me." Then Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) faced him, and Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) struck such a blow on his skull that his sword passed through his jaw, and the army heard the sound of Hazrat Ali's (may Allah be pleased with him) strike. Eventually, victory was granted to them.
