حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ مُبَارَكٍ ، عَنْ حَيْوَةَ . وَعَتَّابٍ , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا حَيْوَةُ ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْمَعَافِرِيِّ ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ قَوْمِهِ أَخْبَرَهُ , أَنَّهُ حَضَرَ ذَلِكَ عَامَ الْمَضِيقِ , أَنَّ عُبَادَةَ بْنَ الصَّامِتِ أَخْبَرَ مُعَاوِيَةَ حِينَ سَأَلَهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ الَّذِي سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عِقَالًا قَبْلَ أَنْ يَقْسِمَ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اتْرُكْهُ حَتَّى يُقْسَمَ ، وَقَالَ عَتَّابٌ : حَتَّى نَقْسِمَ ، ثُمَّ إِنْ شِئْتَ أَعْطَيْنَاكَ عِقَالًا ، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَعْطَيْنَاكَ مِرَارًا " .
Once, Hazrat Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Hazrat Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) about the man who had asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) for a rope before the distribution of the spoils of war. Hazrat Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave this request for now until the spoils of war are distributed. Then, if you wish, you will be given the rope, and if you wish, you will be given many times more than that."
