It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the verse of debt was revealed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The first to deny something out of forgetfulness and unawareness was Adam (peace be upon him), and its detail is as follows: When Allah Almighty created Adam (peace be upon him), after some time He passed His hand over his back and brought forth all his progeny that would exist until the Day of Resurrection, and began to present his offspring before him. Adam (peace be upon him) saw among them a man whose complexion was radiant. He asked: 'O Lord! Who is this?' Allah said: 'This is your son Dawud (David).' He asked: 'O Lord! How long is his lifespan?' Allah said: 'Sixty years.' He said: 'O Lord! Increase his lifespan.' Allah said: 'That is not possible, but it is possible that I reduce some years from your lifespan and add them to his.' The lifespan of Adam (peace be upon him) was one thousand years. Allah took forty years from it and added forty years to the lifespan of Dawud (peace be upon him), and wrote this matter down and made the angels witnesses to it. When the time of Adam’s (peace be upon him) death approached and the angels came to seize his soul, Adam (peace be upon him) said: 'Forty years of my life still remain.' He was told: 'You have already given those forty years to your son Dawud.' But he said: 'I did not do so.' Thereupon Allah presented that written document before him and the angels testified to it."
