حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُغِيرَةُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ نُسَيٍّ ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ ، قَالَ : عَلَّمْتُ نَاسًا مِنْ أَهْلِ الصُّفَّةِ الْكِتَابَةَ وَالْقُرْآنَ ، فَأَهْدَى إِلَيَّ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ قَوْسًا ، فَقُلْتُ : لَيْسَتْ لِي بِمَالٍ ، وَأَرْمِي عَنْهَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى ، فَسَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنْ سَرَّكَ أَنْ تُطَوَّقَ بِهَا طَوْقًا مِنْ نَارٍ فَاقْبَلْهَا " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that I taught some people from among the Ahl-e-Suffah to write and to recite the Holy Qur'an. One of them presented me with a bow as a gift. I thought to myself that I do not possess wealth, so I will use this for archery in the path of Allah. Then I asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this matter. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you like that a collar of fire should be placed around your neck, then by all means accept it.
