Hadith 22601

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I entered the Prophet’s Mosque and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting among the people. I also went and sat in the gathering. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What prevented you from offering two rak‘ahs before sitting down? I submitted: I saw you sitting and the people also appeared to be sitting, so I sat down as well. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you enters the mosque, he should not sit until he has offered two rak‘ahs.
