It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with them) that once I and some young men of the Quraysh went to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) and asked him, "Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recite (Qur'an) aloud in Zuhr and Asr prayers?" He replied, "No." We asked, "Perhaps he used to recite quietly?" He said, "Be silent! That is even worse. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was a servant under command. By Allah! Whatever message he was sent with, he conveyed it. He did not tell us anything specifically, leaving out the people, except for three things: First, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) specifically commanded us to complete the ablution; second, that we should not eat charity; and third, that we should not make a donkey mount a mare."
