It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood on a wheat-colored camel to deliver a sermon. On that day, Hazrat Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was riding behind the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said, "O people! Acquire knowledge before knowledge is taken away, and before knowledge is seized." And Allah Almighty revealed this command: "O you who believe! Do not ask about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble..." After the revelation of this verse, we did not consider it good to ask too many questions from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and we were cautious about it. One day, we went to a Bedouin. He spread his sheet for us and sat for a long time, so much so that I saw the edge of the sheet hanging over his right eyebrow. After a while, we said to him, "Ask the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a question." So he said, "O Messenger of Allah! When the copies of the Qur'an will be among us, how will knowledge be taken away from us, while we ourselves have learned its commands and have taught them to our wives, children, and servants?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed head, and due to anger, redness appeared on his blessed face. Then he said, "May your mother weep for you! The Jews and Christians also have the scriptures with them, but now they do not adhere to a single letter of what their prophets (peace be upon them) brought. Remember! The meaning of knowledge being taken away is that the bearers of knowledge will be taken away." He said this three times.
